Binowang National High School is named after a famous big tree named “Binowang”. According to the pioneer residents of the place, the tree was very useful to the lumads and natives of Barangay Fatima. It was used as a resting shade after long distance walks and oftentimes served as a meeting place for some natives from far-flung areas. Barangay Fatima has a total land area of more of less six hundred hectares (600 hectares) based on the actual mapping conducted by the Local Government Unit (City Assessor’s Office). Its land is agricultural and the major crops are banana, coconut, mango and other fruits. Most of the peoples’ livelihood is revolve around agriculture and farming in which they plant certain crops and raise poultry and livestock for their subsistence and for their other needs. Brgy. Fatima, based on the 2016 survey has as estimated population of Nine Thousand (9,000) inhabitants and more or less one thousand (1,000) households. The school was established sometime in May 1979 through a Barangay Resolution authored by the then chieftain Mr. Lencio Antao which was also supported by his barangay councilors. Geographically, the school site is situated fifty-seven kilometers (57 km) from the heart of Davao City, and twenty-three kilometers (23 km) from the City of Panabo. The place is a little hilly with rough and rugged terrain where most of the roads are not yet concretized. It could be reached via Panabo City or Lasang, Davao City. Her geographical location can be one of the reasons why students have difficulty continuing their studies in college once they finish high school. The peace and order situation of the place sometimes hamper the progress and growth of the community. It has negative effects to those who were displaced because of armed conflict and differences in political ideologies. Based on school records, most students who dropped from school before were residents of sitios which accordingly were places where NPA insurgents and AFP soldiers often clash. At present, most of the students who dropped out from school are those who experienced financial constraints. They cannot continue their studies even with burning desire because they are financially hard-up. In the end, they are forced to prioritize their subsistence above all other things. The peoples’ source of living is largely dependent on farming and raising farm animals such as pigs, poultry and cattle. Some are working as laborers and employees of banana plantations and factories. There are also a few residents who are working in the LGU and some Government agencies. For more than 32 years now, the school has been trying it’s best to provide quality education to the school children of Barangay Fatima and other neighboring barangays amidst having minimal MOOE and the lack of nearby industries that can be tapped as possible partners and stakeholders.
